We are Swanne Bonny,
We are part of vzw Stuurvrouw, a non-profit aiming to get more women aboard. We do so with 3 projects: our racing team Swanne Bonny, our fundraising team Sailing for Think Pink, and our cruising team - soon to be.
Our beautiful sailing ship is named after the 17th-century pirate Anne Bonny, who defended her vessel while the men below deck slept off their drunken stupor.
In traditional sailing, mechanisms of sexism and machismo are so deeply ingrained that they still linger in modern sailing, albeit under a surface of apparent health. We, the Swanne Bonny team, aim to address this underlying wound with care.
Unconscious, structural discrimination often pushes female sailors in mixed teams into "female" roles, stifling our learning process and self-confidence.
By sailing in an all-female team, we create a safe space for self-development.
At the same time, we seek to challenge the invisible belief that only men are capable of participating in major sailing races. By focusing on better teamwork, precision, and creativity, we overcome any potential shortcomings in physical strength.
Our ultimate goal? Participate in Europe’s longest and toughest offshore sailing race: the Rolex Fastnet Race, 2025 edition.
